How it works
Where the facts come from
Every medicine is a product authorised by the UK's Veterinary Medicines Directorate, from its Product Information Database, refreshed weekly. The legal category, active ingredients, licensed species and authorisation numbers are the VMD's. The register was last read on 4 October 2026.
Prices are read from UK online pharmacies' public product pages, as each site's robots.txt allows, by a reader that says who it is. We only read pharmacies on the VMD's register of authorised online retailers.
How a price gets onto a page
- Matched with certainty. A pharmacy's listing is shown against a medicine only when its brand, strength and form match exactly one authorised product — and its species or weight band too. “Metacam oral suspension 32 ml” with no strength could be two products, so it is not shown at all.
- Compared per dose. Each pack's price is divided by its tablets, pipettes or millilitres.
- Only fair comparisons. An out-of-stock listing, a price more than 7 days old, a price not in pounds and a £0 placeholder are shown and never called the cheapest.
- Delivery in the pharmacy's words. We never turn “free over £39” into a number we can't be sure of — the calculator lets you put in what you'll pay.
Who makes this
Praxis makes software for veterinary practices, including the tools practices use to publish price lists and written prescriptions under the CMA's Order. The same data powers this site. It is free for pet owners, with no commission and no advertising, because a market where prices are easy to compare is better for owners and for good practices alike.
